button-up or button-down?

i was talking to two people about wearing button-up shirts and they were both giving me odd looks. i guess it's one of those things i say that i wasn't aware was odd, but it turns out it is. i would have never even thought to say button-down.

I am responsive to both. I think I call them button downs, but button ups makes more sense, since you button them up.

Laura, I don't even remember how I got linked up to your blog (maybe Jenny) but I'm avoiding doing work by reading it. You are more interesting than IP research. I just thought I'd share. My dad is very picky about this - apparently "button down" is only supposed to refer to shirts where the collar actually buttons down to the shirt. Although he could be making that up, he thinks it's important and corrects me every time I call something a button down :)
